Blepharoplasty

This procedure is commonly performed for both functional and cosmetic reasons.  Functionally the upper eyelid can develop loose skin over time.  The skin can hang over the eyelashes and obscure the superior and/or peripheral visual fields.  This is common in elderly patients as the skin tends to loosen and separate from the underlying tissue with age. This can limit functional vision and may necessitate surgical correction.  Cosmetically the upper and lower lids may have excessive tissue or wrinkling at any age, which can be cosmetically improved by this procedure.

A blepharoplasty procedure involves making small incisions along the crease of the eye lid and removing the excess tissue.  The procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting.  Antibiotics must be used to reduce risk of infection and care must be taken to protect the eyelids post-operatively. There is some swelling and bruising to be expected for several days after the procedure.  The cosmetic and functional improvement may take several weeks to be fully appreciated.

Botox
This non-surgical treatment is utilized for both medical and cosmetic conditions.  Medically Botox can be used to relax over-active muscles which can cause unwanted movements and functional limitations of the face and vision.  Cosmetically Botox is utilized to reduce wrinkling of the skin of the face.  This popular procedure is not permanent and must be repeated after several months to maintain effects.

Latisse
This is one of the newest cosmetic options available.  Latisse is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker. Eyelash hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes.  This treatment can show increased eyelash growth within several months of use.  The treatment is used for several months and then stopped and must be repeated to maintain effect.
